Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Wire Harness?
A group or a bundle of wires integrated together usually with connectors to allow functionality between components in an electrical or an electrical/mechanical design.
Why would you need a Custom Wiring Harness?
There are many items that are utilized in many different assemblies. Customization can be necessary to integrate standard components to be utilized in many different ways and allow many different options. As an example, one motor could power many devices from a bulldozer to farming equipment, but integration between different platforms requires custom configurations and uses.
What is a Cable Assembly?
A cable or a group of cables assembled together to perform a function within an electrical or electrical/mechanical device. Usually, a cable consists of multiple wires or conductors with a jacket around the outside, sometimes there is a filler (to keep it round), and there can be shielding to keep electrical noise from interfering with other sensitive components within a manufactured device.
What is a Discrete Wire Assembly?
Similar to a cable assembly (please see “What is a Cable Assembly†in FAQ’s) but the wires are individual rather than in a multi conductor cable. There can be assemblies that only use a few wires to many depending upon application.
What is an Electro/Mechanical Assembly?
An assembly that is modified to integrate with other items. An example would be soldering wires to a switch and adding connectors to attach the switch to a circuit board or other item.
What is PPAP?
Production Part Approval Process is a system first developed primarily for automotive production use, but today is used to ensure compliance in all areas from design to production. Many areas of design and production of any particular items are verified and documented before actual production components are manufactured, and is adapted by many manufacturers for validation of process and components.
What are Automotive Style Cables and Harnesses?
Though originally developed for Automotive use, many industries from Off Road, Agricultural, Military, Industrial and many more, it has become commonplace to utilize connectors and systems that are sealed and water resistant and sometimes even waterproof. It may be a misnomer to call them automotive, generally when you see sealed connectors and components on a device, many people in industry refer to these as automotive type Wire Harnesses and Cable Assemblies.
What are Heavy Wire Assemblies?
We generally think of wires of a size from 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) and higher as “heavy wire†though it is not a measure of weight necessarily (though the lower gauges get heavier as they go down). You do need to utilize different equipment to process the larger wire sizes. AWG is backwards to people not in the wire industry in that the lower the AWG, the larger the wire size. As an example, 4 AWG is larger than 8 AWG. The largest wire Park Manufacturing can machine process is 0000 or four aught, of which the diameter is the approximate size of a quarter. Other larger sizes can be made as well, but are less common.
What are Battery Cables?
These cables are used anywhere there is a battery powering a device. Many utilize a large wire gauge (see Heavy Wire Assemblies), but not all heavy wire assemblies are battery cables, though they are very similar depending upon application. Park Manufacturing can produce many types of Custom Battery Cables to your specific requirements.
What is Custom Braided Cable and Harness Protection?
Wire Harness and Cable Assemblies can be protected from abrasion and harsh environments through the use of custom braiding. We utilize several machines that can apply or braid a protective covering on any Cable Assembly or Custom Wire Harness that is unique and custom in every way. We use several different types of material called braiding yarn that is woven onto almost any assembly and it can be customized through color or degree of protected needed. Please see video (add link)
What is Custom Testing?
Since every Wire Harness and Cable Assembly we produce are custom configured to our customers exact requirements, Park Manufacturing produces our own test and build boards and fixtures on site. We keep very exact records of all of the items we produce and practice revision control on all of our custom built fixturing ensuring a repeatable, high-quality product is produced every time.
How many facilities does Park Manufacturing utilize?
Park Manufacturing utilizes one facility located in Cambridge, MN, and proudly produces all of our products domestically in America. Our 80000 square foot facility is geo thermal and designed to be a comfortable, clean, well-lit production environment that we are proud to have customers visit. Please schedule a tour today!
Does Park Manufacturing have a specialty?
While anyone familiar with the Wire Harness and Cables Assembly Industry typically specializes or focuses on one particular type of product, Park Manufacturing utilizes a team concept that allows us to specialize by product type, and be effective across a broader spectrum of product capabilities. As an example, we have a team that specializes in Multi Conductor Cable Assembly as their primary product type, and we have teams that are segregated by Complex Wire Harness, Simple Wire Harness, Battery Cables and Heavy Wire Processing, Soldering, Military, Braiding, and other Manufacturing Specialties as needed. Park Manufacturing is a complete source within Electrical, Electronic, Military, Industrial, Agricultural, Recreational, and Off-Road power wiring solutions.
What sort of Volume is needed for Park Manufacturing to participate?
Park Manufacturing specializes in high product mix and lower volume production. This means we do not require large volumes to create and produce even specialized custom products. Many off shore and low-cost countries need larger volumes, large container loads, and long lead time and shipping considerations. This does not mean that Park Manufacturing cannot work with higher volume, but our specialization is unique in that we can provide a high-quality product without huge volume commitments. Since we are proudly Made in the USA, shipping concerns are mitigated as well.
What other products does Park Manufacturing produce?
While our primary focus is on Wire Harness, Cables Assemblies, Battery Cables, and other wire-based offerings, we do work with customers with many alternate production needs. Many of which may include integration of a Wire Harness or Cable Assembly within an Enclosure, Panel, or Box that may be wired together with various Switches, Relays, Joy Sticks, and other components with the ability to test and complete an assembly. We can offer simple assembly and coordination of products as well to save our customers time and resources.
Is Park Manufacturing ISO Certified?
Park Manufacturing is compliant to ISO9001:2015. Copies of our certification are available on this web page (insert link). Park Manufacturing is consistently reviewing and updating our procedures and processes to serve our customer base efficiently.
